Danville Public Library started offering electronic books or “eBooks” on Friday.
The library worked since October to bring eBooks to library patrons through a consortium of 10 library systems named Southern Virginia Libraries United Electronically, which shares the cost of the eBook subscription service, said Shelly Hypes Janosko, Danville library director.
“Our patrons have really wanted this service,” Janosko said. “I’m really excited to be able to offer it to them.”
The subscription service offered an initial discount and so the Danville library invested only $1,500 so far, she said.
The initial collection starts with a couple hundred books of different genres with more to be added later. Patrons had been asking about eBooks for months. This will especially help the library’s homebound patrons, she added.
Readers with a library card in good standing with an electronic book reader and access to the Internet can download the eBooks easily, and up to five books at a time. Overdue fines aren’t a concern, as the eBooks return automatically.
Janosko expects the number of residents with a library card to increase because of the eBook program.
“I think it definitely will promote reading for a lot of individuals,” she added.
Patrons can request specific eBooks at the library or by emailing librarydirector@ci.danville.va.us.
