Dr. Tom Fame is an allergist by trade, but the pictures of his recent trip to Haiti prove he's a philanthropist by choice when he's not on the clock.
Dr. Fame is back from his longest trip yet to the island nation.
He shot video on his two week visit to Cabestor Valley in January. He's edited and posted it to Youtube for those following his work to see.
After almost 16 years of visiting Haiti, building the schools and other infrastructure, he says, his work is just now taking a turn.
"I think that's the big thing that happened this trip that really gave me a lot of hope, that all these years the education is now transforming the community," Dr. Fame said.
With three primary schools, fully operational and staffed Dr. Fame is helping the valley take it to the next level.
Back in November, they started working to define the community with geographical boundaries.
Even send out surveys to community members about one or two problems to start working on.
He says, creating a five year plan is the goal.
"Now we're taking it with this five year plan to the next level where we're not just building buildings and structures, but we're building people and building community," explained Fame.
Unlike other doctors Fame has spent the past 16 years not offering medical services, but a vision and a path to making this community survive on its own.
"Our goal is to walk so they don't need us anymore, so this trip was the beginning of the next phase."
Dr. Fame has booked a flight to go back in June to follow up again on the five year plan.
He says a lot of work is left to do, but the thousands of people that live in the valley are working towards a better life everyday and his visits are just a small part of the effort.
"I don't think it will ever be done, but I can see the end of the rainbow I guess."
