The layoffs that ITT Exelis said would begin early in 2012 are underway in Roanoke County.
According to Ken Darby, Director of Communications for ITT Exelis' Geospatial Systems division, about 300 hourly workers at the Hollins plant received notification on Wednesday, January 11th, that they were being laid off. Darby added that salary workers would be told if they're getting laid off by the end of the month.
WSLS first reported on the forthcoming layoffs this past December.
The Hollins plant makes night vision systems for the company, and is a primary supplier for the U.S. Military.
"Due to anticipated U.S. defense government procurement reductions, we have experienced an impact on the size and frequency of night vision contracts. This impact has resulted in a need for the ITT Exelis Roanoke facility to adjust production capacity, as well as employee headcounts, to match this new business reality," read a statement Darby provided in an e-mail to WSLS.
