The National D-Day Memorial in Bedford will host two lectures focusing on a heroic group of women and medics in World War II.
“Women on the War Front: The Rochambelles” is set for Wednesday and spotlights the only women’s group assigned to combat on the European Front during the war.
In July 1944, the group crossed the English Channel into France and worked to save soldiers’ lives by ambulance service, facing constant danger. The women were among the first to enter Paris during the liberation in August 1944 and were held in high esteem by the end of the war in Europe.
April Cheek-Messier, Vice President for Operations and Education at the memorial, will lead the presentation on the Rochambelles.
“The Medicine of War: Combat Medics in WWII” is scheduled for Jan. 25. Hugh Scrogham, a local historian, will speak during a slide show presentation about the vital role of medics.
Both programs take place at noon at the Bedford Welcome Center on Burks Hill Road in Bedford. The memorial is encouraging visitors to bring their own lunch.
