Westside Elementary School had a surprise for the Roanoke Kiwanis Club on Wednesday.
Guest speaker principal Seydric Williams brought the Westside Elementary Debaters to argue the idea of merit pay for teachers.
The fifth graders did all of their own research before presenting to the group.
Williams said Westside is adding more clubs and programs to the school because it helps students in the classroom.
"When students are connected to a particular program or organization they tend to perform better in the classroom because they have an advisor or someone watching over them," Williams said.
The school is putting added emphasis on getting more minority students into gifted learning programs.
