Radford University's (RU) student volunteer EMS team (RUEMS) is being credited with helping save a life.
According to a news release from RU, student members of the RUEMS responded to a call for help on January 18th around 9:00 p.m., where a patient at a dialysis center on East Main Street had their heart stop, and not responding.
When the RUEMS team arrived, they found nurses at the dialysis center performing CPR. The RUEMS team used its defibrillator to revive the patient.
The women was eventually airlifted by Lifeguard 11 to Roanoke Memorial Hospital.
The news release described the incident as the RUEMS team's "first response to a 'full code' call."
According to the university:
RUEMS is a student club operated under the auspices of the Radford University Police Department. Lieutenant William Rutledge is the university's liaison to the EMS and is directly responsible for the management and support of the crew. RUEMS answers about 350 calls a year.
"These students get nothing for what they do, and few people know the types of calls they run into sometimes," Rutledge said in the release. "They see things that most college students their age have never seen. They also do almost everything on their own. We should all be proud of the team."
