The small town of Buchanan is now dealing with a big problem.
As we first broke on wsls.com Wednesday, Wanda Smith was fired as Buchanan Town Treasurer on January 16th amid an investigation into suspected missing town money.
Smith served as town treasurer for nearly 30 years.
Botetourt County Sheriff's Office Chief Deputy Delbert Dudding said the investigation began around January 1st, and that investigators are now going through town records looking for the missing money.
Dudding added that the investigation is ongoing and there is no timetable for when the case could be turned over to the Commonwealth’s Attorney for potential charges.
"This is an unfortunate situation and these are tough times for Buchanan,” Mayor Tom Middlecamp said. “But things are getting straightened out and we know they will be better in the future."
10 On Your Side went to the home of Smith Thursday, but there was no answer.
Buchanan Town Clerk Tina Lilly is serving as the acting town treasurer.
The Buchanan Town Council is expected to hire a permanent replacement at its next meeting February 13th.
