Dr. John Holdren toured the hi-tech labs of the Danville Institute of Advanced Learning and Research on Thursday. He’s President Obama’s top advisor on science and technology.
You might be wondering why did Dr. Holdren visit here? It's all to build on the President's State of the Union Address from earlier this week.
Dr. Barry Flinn showed Holdren the research going on at the institute, like where they're bioengineering plants like switch grass to grow faster, and withstand drought conditions.
The advisors also met Mira from Finland, who's just one of the international students doing research in Danville.
Dr. Holdren says the future on manufacturing in America, starts in places like this. He says it the innovation here at the institute that will carry into the future.
Holdren added that America has never been good at competing for the cheapest jobs, and "we don’t want to be."
Holden called traditional manufacturing 'a thing of the past,' and research like the projects at the institute, becoming the new frontier of manufacturing.
