The second round of layoffs at ITT Exelis' Roanoke County plant in Hollins have taken place.
Company spokesman Ken Darby wrote in an e-mail to WSLS, that 75 salaried employees at the plant were laid off January 19th & 20th. This is on top of the 300 hourly workers that the company laid off from the plant back on January 11th.
Darby added that ITT Exelis is working with the Virginia Employment Commission (VEC) to help the salaried workers "with the transition." The company plans to hold a "transition day" with the VEC at the Sheraton Hotel & Conference Center on February 1st. Darby said the event will include other local companies who may have job openings.
Darby reiterated the reason behind the layoffs, writing:
Due to anticipated U.S. defense government procurement reductions, we have experienced an impact on the size and frequency of night vision contracts. This impact has resulted in a need for the ITT Exelis Roanoke facility to adjust production capacity, as well as employee headcounts, to match this new business reality...
ITT Exelis will continue to deliver on all contracts, and will also continue to develop the next generation of night vision technology to ensure that our military has the most advanced equipment and capabilities. We remain committed to our customers, and to providing the best night vision technology in order to protect national security and support our international partners and allies.
