Strawberry Hill Races will combine its steeplechase tradition with the opening day of the Colonial Downs thoroughbred racing season on June 2.
The new date and partnership will allow a dozen races that day: five on turf with steeplechase jumps, four on a flat turf track and three on a flat dirt track. On-site betting will be available on all races.
Tailgating areas that have been around the dirt track will move to the green near the clubhouse or a triangle area around the first turn.
New this year is the option to buy individual admission tickets, as well as preferred and valet parking, on the day of the event at Colonial Downs. General parking will be free. Valet parking will cost $10.
Ticket prices will drop slightly to a range of $95 to $275 for reserved tailgating spaces. General admission tickets will cost $11 in advance and $12 at the door. Jockey Club tickets, $40, and Turf Club tickets, $50, will include a buffet. Ticket sales begin April 2.
Gates will open at 10 a.m. for reserved tailgate space holders, with general admission beginning at 11 a.m. The first race begins at 12:55 p.m.
Curry Roberts, president of the State Fair of Virginia Inc., which produces the races, said he hopes the reduced prices and new options for admission will encourage higher attendance for the 80th anniversary of the event. Estimated attendance in previous years has been 12,000 to 15,000.
