Members of the Bland Fire and Rescue Departments are mourning the loss of one of their own.
Justin Dunn was killed early Sunday morning off Railroad Trail just outside of Bastian.
There are snapped trees and pieces of debris left where Dunn ran off the left side of the road.
Neighbors say there was snow on the ground Sunday morning, and our meteorologists say it was most likely snowing when the accident happened. Police have not said whether the accident was weather related, or if Dunn was responding to a call. They have confirmed Dunn was not wearing his seatbelt.
Dunn was a third generation firefighter and a member of the rescue squad.
Dozens of people have posted comments about him online on the website Firefighter Nation.
One person writes, “Bland County has lost a highly trained firefighter, a respected young man, and no doubt he would have been a strong leader in the community. It was a privilege to know him, and I will never forget his dedication to preventing loss of property and life in Bland County.“
Monday, fellow firefighters held back tears as they set up this memorial to say goodbye to one of their closest members.
They may not have many answers about what caused the crash that killed Justin Dunn, but there’s no question what he meant to the community.

A Bland High School graduate and county firefighter was killed early Sunday morning in a single-vehicle wreck on Virginia 615, state police said.
According to a dispatcher, 21-year-old Justin Paul Dunn of Bland was driving a 2004 Chevrolet Silverado west on Route 615 when his pickup ran off the left side of the roadway and struck a tree. The truck then continued on for another 135 feet before hitting another tree.
The wreck happened near Virginia 646 at 2:15 a.m., police said.
Trooper K.S. Bailey investigated the crash but wasn’t available for comment.
Dunn, a member of the Bland County Volunteer Fire Department, worked at ABB in Bland, according to his MySpace page.
He was the son of department’s chief.

H.R. HILL YOU ARE SUCH AN IDIOT. YOU DON’T KNOW ANYTHING ABOUT JUDD OR HIS FAMILY. I JUST HOPE THAT YOU NEVER HAVE TO EXPERIENCE THE PAIN THEY ARE GOING THRU RIGHT NOW. I CAN’T BE THERE TONIGHT BUT MY PRAYERS ARE WITH YOU.
Mr or Mrs Hill, It is very evident that you are assuming that because of Justin’s age that he was drinking. Are you aware of what happens when you assume something?
I have had the pleasure of watching Justin grow up since he played ball with and went to school with my children. Justin (referred to as Judd by his friends) was a wonderful young man.
Bland County may be small in size but we are large in heart and caring for our own. I believe that you owe Justin’s parents and family an apology for the unsubstantiated accusations. You are very cruel and heartless.
Jeff, Kathryn, and Kristen, our thoughts and prayers are with you.
Mr Hill your comment was very cruel, heartless and disrespectful!! How dare you make comments about someone you didn’t even have the pleasure of meeting! You did not know Justin so how could you know what kind of person he really was! He was a good friend and a wonderful person. One of the nicest people anyone could ever even dream of meeting. Justin was a very loving, well liked person in Bland county. Anyone would be lucky to have known him as their friend! You do not know anything about Bland county or Justin. We are a very close community and when someone disrespects one of our own (especially some one like Justin), you disrespect the whole county! Justin and his father are both well respected members of the fire dept and community.
Mr & Mrs Dunn you and your family are in our thoughts and prayers! Justin was a wonderful young man and he will be forever missed. ABB will not be the same without his smiling face.
Our deepest sympathy

H.R.Hill and anyone that can assume something so horrible - you have no idea what you are talking about. He was a wonderful young man who had his life cut short unfairly. He did nothing but give help to others and do good in his community. He lived his life to do for others. You should be ashamed of yourself. Everyone that knew Justin is struggling right now to just breathe and all you do is assume something that has no meaning at all. Instead of accusing how about praying for this family and the many many friends and the entire community that lost Justin way too soon.
How cruel can H. R. Hill or anyone be? Justin was our nephew and our entire family is in mourning over the tragic loss of this fine young man. I hope that Mr./Ms. Hill never has to experience what our family is now. This young man gave his life to his community and helping others. To make such cruel comments about him is beyond belief. Please keep our family in your prayers.
It does not matter if he was drinking or passed out. No one knows for sure what happened and we may never know. A friend of mine that lives near the accident said the weather was bad. It could have easily been a weather related accident, deer jumping out in front of him, or simply running off edge of the road. The bad part is Bland County lost a firefighter that was known in the community, and was well liked. As far as if he was drinking or passed out, and that if he was that it would be covered up since he was the Chief’s son is something that no one should say!! That to me is very rude. Unless you were at the scene (I know people that were) don’t make comments until you know all the facts. There is a family, friends and a community that is grieving over a lost of a loved one. The important thing is someone died that meant a lot to others.
What’s sad is making any assumptions at all. I know the family and they are good people.
sounds like he was either drunk or passed out; either of which will be covered up b/c of his association with the fire dept…still sad
