I-81 back open in Montgomery County, after pipe truck accident

Pipe VDOT says fell off a tractor trailer and gouged pavement near Ironto on I-81

VDOT says the accident scene has been cleared, and both lanes of I-81 northbound are back open.

I’ve just driven past the accident. VDOT crews have re-opened one lane of I-81.

VDOT now says the back-up has extended to four miles.

VDOT now says both lanes of I-81 northbound near Ironto are blocked by a tractor-trailer accident.
VDOT spokeswoman Heidi Underwood tells WSLS that a truck hauling culvert pipes had three pipes fall off, and gouge the pavement.
Clean-up crews estimate they will need at least an hour to patch the pavement, and clear the accident.

VDOT says there’s a three mile traffic back-up.
Drivers are being asked to get off I-81 north at the Christiansburg exit, and drive up Route 460 to Dixie Caverns to get back on I-81.

A portion of Interstate 81 North in Montgomery County is blocked.
According to V-DOT, the left lane near the Ironto exit is closed because of an “incident.“
Drivers in this area should expect delays.
