Man charged with animal cruelty for kicking, killing opossum
Published: June 30, 2009
Danville Police charge a man with animal cruelty he allegedly committed while on a ride along with an officer. Police say 22-year-old Evan Schuler had been approved for a two week ride along program. He was with an officer as they stopped to get gas at the Monument Street facility. Police say Schuler jumped from the car, and kicked a opossum several times, killing it. Schuler told police opossums routinely kill his chickens and the behavior was “instinctive.“
Reader Reactions
As an observer I will try to ignore the comments about spell checking, usage of verbs by the reporter and others.
To me the real issue is the incredible waste of resources involved here. I, too, know Mr. Schuler very well and have watched him grow into a fine human being. He has spent countless hours helping others in need.
It appears that the Danville police department has crime completely under control and can find nothing of more significance to clog up the judicial system.
Opossums are known for spreading diseases to other animals as well as to humans. Those scavengers have decimated the flock of chickens belonging to his family.
Perhaps the police and court system would be more productive if they actually started enforcing, and prosecuting, real crimes. Crimes such as drug dealing, robbery, murder, rape, to name a few.
I do not wish to indict the entire Danville police force here, but somebody there needs a few lessons on the efficient use of resources.
Observer
Evan Schuler is a good man. I personally know him very well and I know that he would never, ever intentionally hurt anyone just for the fun of it. From what he told his close friends, he got out of the police car to make a phone call and the opossum ran out from under a fence to him and it startled him causing him to kick it away from him.
You can call it animal cruelty, but anyone would know that it was instinctive.
“It’s”
*Knows, from common sense, that “it’s” means “it is” and makes no sense in this context, and realizes it is probably used by losers who have nothing else to do but edit news reports for correct grammar. Thanks for your contributions to society, Hank Rutherford Hill. I pray you find respite from the weight of having to correct the rash of irresponsible journalism on WSLS’s website alone on your twin bed in your parents’ basement.
note: Hank Rutherford Hill helped contribute to the correct grammar use in article. Also of note is the wrong verb tense in the first verb of this article. Not exactly “on our side”; not sure if Mr. Carlin would be happy with this…
“instintive”
*looks up “instintive” in dictionary, finds it’s meaning to be “used by 3rd rate journalists who are too lazy/uneducated to use spell check ON AN ARTICLE TO BE PUBLISHED FOR THE PUBLIC TO VIEW”*
Are you sure it wasn’t Danville Police training? They probably just couldn’t find a dachshund.
