Virginia sets record for new registered voters

It looks like voter turnout will be heavy in Virginia the coming election day.

The State Board of Elections says the Commonwealth set a record for the number of new registered voters, with 436,000 new voters signing up.

This brings the total number of registered voters in Virginia to 5,021,993, according to the Board.

A breakdown of the new registered voters shows nearly 40% will be younger than 25 on election day.  Women also represent the majority of new registered voters.

In the WSLS coverage area, Lynchburg saw the largest growth by percentage of new registered voters, with 15.88% (gain of 7,489 voters).

Montgomery County gained the most number of new voters at 7,687, and also the second largest percentage increase at 13.76%.

Roanoke City gained 9.03% (5,580 voters).

Salem gained 6.94% (1,145 voters).
