Creigh Deeds and Bob McDonnell speak at Boys State

Creigh Deeds and Bob McDonnell speak to the students at Boys State in Lynchburg.  Sharing thoughts and answering questions for about 30 minutes each.

The Democratic gubernatorial nominee Deeds led off the morning, answering questions about everything from health care, to the death penalty, to education.

One student asked Deeds how he would attempt to bring down tuition costs for state colleges and universities.  Deeds answer in part, “The cost of education has shifted from the taxpayer to the tuition payer.  We have to restore a balance between the two.“

After speaking for about 30 minutes, Deeds shared a handshake and some friendly words with his opponent Bob McDonnell.

The Republican gubernatorial nominee then took the stage to speak about topics like energy, transportation, and just like deeds, education.  “I think we need to make college more accessible and affordable” said McDonnell.

One thing that both candidates focused on was technology.  Things like Facebook, Twitter, and text messaging have become important ways to get out their message.

“It’s a whole new way that is cheap, fast and effective. More importantly, it’s where a lot of the younger voters get their information” said McDonnell.

Deeds had a similar take on the subject, “We have made pretty serious efforts to engage new voters, and have been very successful so far.“

With less than five months left until election day, both Deeds and McDonnell know, finding a way to reach Virginians of all ages is key to victory on November.
