Gas falls below $3.00 average in Roanoke

Who would have ever thought that gas for less than $3.00 a gallon would be a welcome sight a few years ago? Now, it feels like our wallets are just a bit heavier than normal.

AAA Mid-Atlantic says the average price for a gallon of regular unleaded in the Roanoke region dipped tsix cents o $2.95 overnight Thursday, October 16th. That’s down $1.05 from a month ago, but still 32 cents more than we paid on average at this time in 2007.
“After a year of doom and gloom at the pumps, this is an unexpected bonanza for drivers and consumers,” said Martha Meade with AAA Mid-Atlantic. “While the economy may be tanking, filling up the gas tank is getting much less painful for consumers,“ Meade added.
According to AAA, the cheapest prices for gas in the Roanoke region can be found at:
- Kangaroo Express on Electric Road (Rt. 419) - $2.799 per gallong
- Trade Mart on Brambleton Avenue - $2.799
- Kroger on Hardy Road - $2.819
- Murphy USA on Valley View Blvd. - $2.829
- Kroger on Valley Gateway Blvd. - $2.829
The state average dropped a nickel overnight to $2.99 a gallon. Roanoke is tied with the Norfolk region for second cheapest average in the Commonwealth. The Richmond region wins the cheapest mark, averaging $2.82 per gallon. The Chrarlottesville region stands at $3.28 per gallon.
The national average dropped five cents overnight to $3.08 per gallon.
