Shoplifting way up in Roanoke

People are stealing more in Roanoke this year than last.
Roanoke police report that shoplifting is up 51-percent in the first eight months of the 2008 compared to 2007.
Larcenies in general are up more than 11-percent.
Roanoke police say they will increase the number of plain clothes officers in stores—especially during the holiday season.
They also plan to increase their effort to educate retailers on how to prevent shoplifting and how to respond when it happens.
