First birthday takes the cake
I’ve never really been a cake person—that is until recently. So when it came to giving my daughter her very first taste of the sweet treat—her first taste of sugar ever—for her first birthday, I wanted it to be good.
It was. Really good.
And it was beautiful.
We had two cakes for the big day, a larger one for us and our friends to enjoy and a small one for her to dig into—literally. She almost disappointed on that front but with a little help from Dad, she dove right in.

Here’s the larger cake we all shared. It reflects our color scheme of orange and pink.

After singing and blowing out a single candle, we put the cake in front of her. She reached out and touched it—only to look perplexed. She touched it again, seemingly to inspect the texture of the icing. She then glanced at the staring crowd and cried, unsure of what to do next, or quite possibly what we were wanting her to do.
Enter Dad to the rescue… My husband took a bite and her gave her a piece. That’s all it took for the light bulb to go off. She liked it and she wanted more. She dove in, grabbing a handful of the delicious fudge marble cake and shoveling it right in her mouth.
It wasn’t quite as messy as I had hoped—purely for picture’s sake. Still still a bit protective and fearful of a sugar overdose, we picked up the rest before she tried to finish it off. She wasn’t happy about it. Luckily, it was anything a hug and holding couldn’t fix. That is, after a complete wipe down.
