Covering another Virginia Tech tragedy

» 1 Comment | Post a Comment

Wednesday night as I got back from dinner… I was told by our 11pm producer that she had just confirmed there had been another murder on Virginia Tech’s campus… as I was hanging up my jacket… my jaw literally dropped… What?  Haven’t students, faculty and staff been through enough?  I wouldn’t want it to happen anywhere… but Blacksburg is my hometown and Virginia Tech is my alma mater… as a person it feels “personal” as a journalist it is news that must be told…

What is wrong with the world?  Growing up in Blacksburg we never worried about anyone getting shot or stabbed… you rarely if ever heard of anything like that… My 5th grade year at Margaret Beeks I walked to my babysitters house everyday after school…  These days my mom certainly wouldn’t have allowed that… especially with all of the recent violence in the New River Valley and beyond…

The older I get the more I sound like my mom or people who are even older… “I miss the good old days…“  granted bread was never 10 cents in my time but gasoline was 89 cents while I was in high school and Blacksburg was one of the last places you would expect to have a murder occur…

Blacksburg is as safe as a small town, small police force, and very large transient population can be.  I lock my house, I lock my car, and I worried about the safety of my children - especially in their teen,  driving years. The non-student population stays away from downtown on Thursday, Friday, and Saturday evenings.  Blacksburg is not an idyllic oasis.  It is exactly what it is.  There are worse places, there are better places.  And we certainly are not immune from tragedy.
