Getting ready for Christmas

As I interviewed a man named Jerry Covey ... recovering from a gunshot wound… who has lost his son in law and is doing the best he can to comfort his grieving daughter I felt immense sadness for a family dealing with a horrible situation so close to Christmas… a time that will always be associated with the death of a love one…

Sharon Bane’s husband Joseph was shot and killed on Tuesday… as she visited with her Dad in the hospital this evening her eyes looked tired and swollen from the tears she had cried… no doubt those tears have been flowing since she came upon her husband and found he had been shot twice in their front yard on Tuesday morning…

Before I left the hospital Sharon said her 14-year-old son Austin wanted to tell me something…

Austin was at the home with his mom on when police say Douglas Jaccard went on a rampage killing Joseph Bane.. hurting two others and setting the home on fire…

Sharon’s Dad tells me that after Joseph was shot… he pulled up to their home and was also shot… that his daughter ran inside with her son.. that Jaccard broke into the home and Sharon told Austin to run out the front door “for his life…“

Austin wanted to make sure that I knew that his Step-Dad, Joseph Bane was a good man and that he would be missed so much… that he had never hurt anyone nor would he.. my eyes filled with tears as a young man was being so brave and strong for his mom…

As a reporter many would say “I am not supposed to cry…“ I choked back the tears because this family does not need sympathy.. they need support and courage and comfort…

I told Austin that his mom was lucky to have such a grown up young man for a son and that I knew she must appreciate him so much… as I said goodbye and looked at Sharon… I was reminded as happens with many tough stories that we never know when tragedy may strike…

My prayers go out to that family tonight as everyone in that hospital room told me they are still in shock ...
