“News” Year’s Eve

Some people wait all year to watch the ball drop and ring in the new year…  if you work in news like many other jobs that never stop… some holidays don’t really feel like holidays…

Tonight I met Matt for dinner on break and as we were walking out to our cars… we said Happy New Year to each other around 7:45pm and that is good enough for me…

Of course I will be working tonight on the late news and will celebrate the new year in my car… on the way home from work but even when I have had off in the past it isn’t really that big of a deal to me… but there is one New Year’s Eve memory that I will cherish for the rest of my life…

I was a little girl staying at my Grandma Davidson’s house over school break… I talk about her a lot because she was the greatest woman I have ever known next to my mom… my grandma was a child at heart her whole life… she felt great joy when her children and grandchildren were happy or enjoying themselves…

Anyway… I wanted to have a New Year’s Eve party and only grandma and I were invited… she let me take her Christmas ribbon and cut it up into tiny pieces (that was our confetti) - then I took small white styrofoam bowls and after poking two holes in the edges I used a rubber band to make the chin strap part of a party hat… picture the bowl on your head “party hat” style with a christmas bow topping it off…

We spent the evening working on our party hats and confetti… it felt like such a big deal… like we were really getting ready for something special… then… as we counted down to the ball drop at midnight I was so excited to throw all of my confetti in the air… (now I realize that my grandma must have had a time trying to get those tiny ribbon pieces out of the carpet the next day)

That memory is as vivid and colorful almost thirty years later as it was that night… sweet memories are priceless… even walking out of a restaurant telling your husband happy new year at 7:45pm is a treasure…

I hope the new year brings you joy, safety and success…
