10 On Your Side learns options for Bent Mountain Elementary School

10 On Your Side is learning more about the options the Roanoke County School Board is considering for the future of Bent Mountain Elementary School.

With only about 60 students, the school is considered by some to come with too high of an operating cost.

County school district spokesman Chuck Lionberger called the closure of Bent Mountain Elementary a “remote” possibility, but said it was still officially on the table for consideration.

More likely options for board members to consider include: having the principal teach half of the day, a principal splitting time between Bent Mountain and the next closest school, Back Creek Elementary, and consolidating classrooms.

The considerations are all part of the school board’s budget process.

The board must have its budget proposal turned in to the board of supervisors by the end of the month, which means it should decide which option the majority likes best in the near future.
