2 charged with murder in death of Covington 2-year-old

A 10 On Your Side update to the investigation of the death of a child in Covington last year. Covington Police say they’ve charged a man and woman with murder, in connection with the death of a 2-year-old back in January of 2008.
Investigators say on Sunday, January 20, 2008, Covington emergency dispatch received a call around 5:30 p.m., asking for help for a 2-year-old girl who was unresponsive.
Covington Rescue Squad members took the child, now identified as Lakin Brown, to Alleghany Regional Hospital. Doctors say the child died.
Covington Police say an Alleghany County grand jury indicted Jeffrey Ailstock and Katrina Hyler on felony homicide, as well as family abuse and neglect of children charges.
Both Ailstock and Hyler are being held at the Alleghany Regional Jail.

I hope that people dont lose sight of the real cause for this discussion..its Lakin Brown.Her life was taken from her and nobody knows who did it,now the Mother is out on bond but the Father isnt?Does that mean the Father did it?In any case after the death of Lakin ,The Mother was still living Next door with Jefferey during the year it took for the police to take them into custody.What Mother would stay with a man that might have had something to do with murder of her child?Why is she still allowed to still live in the same house that her other child lives in when social services deemed her unfit?Heathert,what do you know about this case ?Maybe since you know about social services and Allegany county you know more than the rest of us do .Maybe if you can tell us some of the things you know it would be helpful ?I just would like to know if I should be scared for my children or not and some of the other Mothers in this neighborhood want to know the same thing.The woman she is living with is her stepmother and her myspace says she runs an at home daycare,I bet the parents of the children she watches would want to know if a woman charged with murdering her child is at the same house?I hope that this all comes out in court and she is found innocent because I just want the death of this child to see justice served .She is not guilty untill proven innocent I know this but if she is innocent why was she and the man Jeffery hiding out here in Salem if they had nothing to hide?Heathert??Tell us what you know then maybe it could all be cleared up.I am sorry about the problems you had with social services in Allegany county,it always seems like the really serious cases are ignored and the social workers pay more attention to small problems.I am just thinking that someone at social services should be found guilty of not doing there jobs because they sure didnt protect this poor baby and they still are letting someone get away with murder.I would like to see this all laid to rest I want the truth to be told so everyone in this community can rest knowing the real murderer is put in prison.Heathert,tell us what you know about this case please?
I live in America where we don’t take kindly to child killers!!! OR THOSE WHO SUPPORT THEM!! If there were more rights for the victims and less for the murderers we would have less crime in this country!! So you go ahead and defend this scum bag and the people who got her out. It was her duty to protect her child from danger. When she decided not to do that she gave up her rights as a mother and an American!!! I know more about this story than you think. And that woman is as guilty as they come!!!
andwhat country do you live in and no i dont i just know about whats going on and i know what country i live in and evrey body got rights in the kids and when goes to coart it will be done but its not up to you or anyone to make that choice to make anyone guilty befor a trail and found guilty or not
dart, it looks like you know this person personally, because anyone in their right mind would not want anyone out on bond that has enough evidence against them to be charged with murder!!!! And in any other place she would be held without bond!! Stop taking up for this child killer!!! If she was a real mother that loved her child at all,this would have never happened!!!
to the person thats woorred about it like i said before she didnt get away of murder and if she was a danger to any one she wouldnt get bail she has the same rights that every bod has and the truth will come out but its not up to the news and people to judge a person and think that they got the right to think that thay can say if thay shouldnt be out or no thats why we have laws to keep us from people that thinks like that and yes the new paper and new put the storey out but that donst mean your guilty until proven guity in the court of law and yes i understand about the littel girl and the truth will be told but in time
I just read the comment that the other person"dart"made..Im just going by facts and Yes I stated that I had only lived here a few years ,if you know the real facts I wish you would tell people,its only natural to be disturbed by the fact that this kind of a crime was commited and the person is living next door to you,its scary.This is not about the others next door at all this is an open forum that was printed in the newspaper and by news channels for the public to comment on and I am upset that any person anywhere would be released before the trial date ..like the other girl said ,its like getting away with a murder and then being set free into a community .It upsets me no matter who they are but especially when I live in the house next door.If she is in fact not guilty then the newspaper will shed light and tell the public about that too .I hope that God blesses all of them in this time of sorrow.
I am not sure and wish I knew all the facts but it was listed as a 2nd degree murder charge and it was printed in the newspaper that the medical examiner determined the cause of death to be blunt force trauma to the abdomen,that means someone hit that baby and caused her death.I would like to know what really happened to that child,I am going by exactly what was printed in the newspaper and online .I hope that there is another explanation.Then we dont have to be so worried about living nextdoor.
Alleghany social services is a joke too! They have let my children be put in dangerous situations and ignored my pleas for help! They say I was making “false accusations” and told other co-workers to not take me serious. Thank God my daughters are old enough now to talk in court!!! But what about the poor children that can’t talk! And as for the comment dart made. I hope the whole community shows disgust toward this piece of trash woman and anyone else that helps her. Where were they when her baby was murdered? Maybe they should have done more to help a 2 year old that did not have the ability to help herself. And hopefully God will be with her other child. It is sad to think that she even has contact at all with the other child!
i understand what people are worry about but somepeople like the girl that lves next door she only in on this shes gave them troulble for 2 years this is only more of her way of causing them more troulbe she and other people dont know all thats going on and shouldnt say things that they dont know about yes shes out on bound but they didnt sell there cars or rings and stuff to get her out this person dont know she only guessing at what she thinks shes is out on bound but every body got rights and she will go to court and its up to the courts if she guilty or not and about the baby yea she had another baby but she was inspectin it before all of this happened i know people going to think thinks but dont make commits if you dont know all the facks about it and she has all the same rights as all of us do am not taking up for what happen or but you not gulty until proven gulity in court and if peope is that corsern on the famly thay wouldnt make commits and yell slurs at them when there out side there home and makes commets to the kids that live there ether we all dont know what happen and the truth will com out but but not getting on a computer making up what they think what happened all am saying that this scared neighbor is only trying to start more troulb for them and others that live therein the eighbor hood shes not new there she been about 2 years to all this is a nother way for her to caues more pain on them and yea i understand why a father would take her in shes his child and no matter what she has done he still her father and a father or mother should be there for there child even know thy have done wrong or good
am new to this area by just a few years ,I have never heard of such a court system that lets you buy your way out of the murder or their own child will she not be held responsible..is their a price she will have to pay when this happens to another child she comes in contact with?Have the authorities gave her free reigh to murder the other children she has ,do they know that even though she had custody taken away of her son that she lives in her fathers house with the child she is not supposed to have contact with and that as soon as Lakin died she gave birth to another child..she still lives at the same residence where her children are right next to me..the court ordered them to be taken away from her ..nobody is paying attention I am afraid I will wake up one morning and God forbid see a coroners car after one of her other children has died ..GHod protect us all and especially her children.This is a great message to send to our community..basically they are telling her “you can get away with the murder just move a few hours away and we will just sweep this all under the rug.“I know alot of people on her Fathers side and step mothers side put up their houses and other property and sold off vehicles and jewlery just to post her bond,as far as Im concerned anyone who had anything to do with contributing to getting this child killer out of jail is also guilty and should be ashamed of themselves.
