A 10 On Your Side update to the investigation of the death of a child in Covington last year.  Covington Police say they’ve charged a man and woman with murder, in connection with the death of a 2-year-old back in January of 2008.

Investigators say on Sunday, January 20, 2008, Covington emergency dispatch received a call around 5:30 p.m., asking for help for a 2-year-old girl who was unresponsive.

Covington Rescue Squad members took the child, now identified as Lakin Brown, to Alleghany Regional Hospital.  Doctors say the child died.

Covington Police say an Alleghany County grand jury indicted Jeffrey Ailstock and Katrina Hyler on felony homicide, as well as family abuse and neglect of children charges.

Both Ailstock and Hyler are being held at the Alleghany Regional Jail.

This is so typical of Alleghany police. The court system (JD&R) and the police department do what they want. It is so horrible to think that they would let a possible murderer out on the street. But in small towns, everyone knows someone who knows someone who knows someone…..the point is you can get away with murder!!!

yes its confirmed I called Allegany Jail and she is released on bond ,I called wsls and they plan to investigate ,scarier thing is that I saw her Father bringing her back into the residence nextdoor to me and now I am once again fearful.Since when do homicidal ppl get out on bond ?I am calling on all news channels and agencies for questions.I am contacting as many agencies as I c an and asking for the help of the community to call the local news channels to inquire also allleghany jail or sherriffs dept.I think if enough people are concerned for the welfare and safety of our children they will have ti pick up Katrina Hyler as she is charged with felony homocide yet sitting free tognite right nextdoor to me,my children and is a potential threat to the ft Lewis ,Valleydale rd neighborhood. Please help make your voice be heard please ask questions and demand answers ,How is she alloqwed to go back freely to her children and 3 others tognite? There is no justice it seems like

I am absolutley horrified and amazed that The Mother of this child just taken in for 2nd degree murder is out on Bond ,since when do people accused of 2nd degree murder of their own child get released on bond ?She is to be arraigned on the 29th of this month but I feel shocked that a judge ,magistrate or any person with authority would let a person who is indicted on murder charges go free.Where is the justice for Lakin and the children living in our Salem Community where she is staying? Why is she not held in protective custody, the article stated that the medical examiner said the cause of death was blunt force trauma to the abdomen of this child. Why is she allowed to remain free?? and who will watch out for our children while she is stayin with her father in salem?

My Heart goes out to the Hyler and Ailstock family and especially thier deceased 2 yr old Lakin. We know that God takes care of innocent angels and is watching down over all of the people involved if found guilty we remain faithful that God will bring truth and justice and shed light on this tragic situation, however if found guilty I would hope that Katrina and Jeffery are not allowed back to our neighborhood in Salem ,too many children live in this neighborhood so we hope that if released they do not keep staying at the place they were staying on Valleydale road because we do not need to live in fear .I hope this court proceeding is public so we can know all of the facts having to do with this murder so that it might bring peace of mind to the families affected to the residents in this area.I just wonder why it took so long to actually take these 2 into custody? This makes me afraid that people accused of murder get to remain free to be in the community after a crime of such magnitude is commited? Why did it take so long. Why were these people allowed to go so long without being put in jail? .I think of all the times my children played outside and were within just yards of these people and want to thank God for not letting any harm come to them.I am also angry with the authorities for letting these people be out for so long.I once felt safe here and now Im fearful.

I was shocked and scared when I saw that these two had been charged with homicide and neglect and abuse on a 2 yr old that actually resulted in the death of a child. They stayed with her Father and Step Grandmother and Step Mother along with 3 schoolage children and Katrina Hyler and Lori Hylers baby next to my familys home .I had heard stories but never believed it was a true actual murder of a child .Our prayers go out to this child and her family as they are dealing with such a loss .I have to admit though that I am very relieved knowing that these people are in jail because this neighborhood has so many children. It both scares and sickens me that our family was right nextdoor to these people the whole time.Thank God for watching over us and I hope the truth comes out and all the families affected find peace.
