The Virginia Department of Motor Vehicles received the “Document Security Award” from the Coalition for a Secure Driver’s License during a ceremony in Richmond Monday.

The award recognizes “timely upgrades to the physical attributes of driver’s licenses to reduce counterfeiting, criminal alteration and improve the reliability of card authentication by government and business.“

“The most important component of any identity document is security, which we take very seriously,“ said DMV Commissioner D.B. Smit. “As part of updating the Virginia’s driver’s license, we made sure it had several different security layers so Virginian’s can feel confident in their credential.“

This past summer, The DMV changed driver’s licenses to increase security and reduce risks of fraud.

Congratulations to DMV for this award.  I know they have come a long way in this area in the last several years.  Now, if they can only clean up the vanity plates I’ve seen recently.  Some of the plates that make it “through the process” astound me…
