The Martinsville Fire Marshal’s office is looking for the cause of a house fire Thursday evening.

Crews say it happened around 5:48 p.m. on Emmette Street in the City of Martinsville. Crews found heavy smoke and fire on the lower level of the house. They were able to quickly put out the fire. No one was hurt, but one volunteer from the Ridgeway squad was taken to the hospital for a mild case of heat exhaustion.

The building had significant interior and some exterior damage.

No one was at home at the time of the fire. The Red Cross is helping the family tonight.

The Fire Marshal’s office says a pot was left on top of a hot burner, causing the pot to overheat and catch on fire.
