The young man wanted in connection with a hit and run murder in Salem early Saturday morning, October 11th, has turned himself in to police.
Defense attorney Deborah Caldwell-Bono says Shaun Scott turned himself in Sunday morning. Caldwell-Bono is representing Scott.
Caldwell-Bono tells WSLS that Scott’s side of the story will show what happened was a “terrible accident.“
Salem Police say Scott got in a Jeep, and sped through the crowded parking lot of the Awful Arthur’s on West Main Street, around 2:00 a.m. Saturday morning. A Salem officer says he saw the Jeep hit and kill 23-year-old Zane Blakenship.
Scott faces charges of:
- 1 count first degree murder
- 2 counts attempted malicious wounding
- 4 counts felony hit and run
- 1 count felony property damage

My opinion…..EYE FOR AN EYE!!!
I am amazed at some of the comments defending Shaun Scott. I don’t think the actions that occured Saturday morning are the actions of a bright young man. He chose his course of action and now Zane is no longer with us. The cops were already on the scene. If Shaun was so “bright”, why did he not let the cops handle the situation. If Zane was causing such a problem, which I find hard to believe knowing him personally, then Shaun should have let the cops handle the situation as oppose to hitting the cop car and especially Zane. It was uncalled for. Any record that Zane or Coby may have had does not justify Zane losing his life. Shaun will pay for his wrong doing. Too many witnesses including the officer that was hit were there and I’m sure will testify what happened that night. I’m furious at ill comments made about Zane, Coby, and they do have another brother which explains why one got a phone call while another was trying to revive his brother. Zane was a great guy. I want to tell my baby cousin Matt to hang in there. We all love you.
I find it odd that noone here has mentioned the fact this supposed sweet guy and good guy has mentioned the fact he swerved to hit Zane, Coby, and Hughes which I find to be a very important detail not only given to police by surrounding victims and witnesses but by the cop he hit who even made the same report for so you morons who say this was an accident I hope you dont have your head examined by same people who did Shauns because obviously you all have issues and thats why its murder 1 because he tried to kill them and he succeeded with Zane and if Coby hadnt pushed Hughes out of the way him and Coby wouldnt have a dislocated arm so people who werent there claiming this was an accident dont post what you think happen post what did happen
ok…so most of the people resonding to this don’t even know the parties involved. DONT SPECULATE! Zane was a great person, and who knows Shaun may have been too. Unfortunately bad things happen to good people. But what I don’t understand is why people are almost saying it figures or he shouldve done this. Let me just say that he had no way of knowing that would be his last night on earth or that the actions that conspired that evening would end his life. But neither did Shaun. NO matter how scared, drunk, or confused Shaun was if it was truley an honest accident I believe he wouldve stopped. Would you have? I mean you obviously saw the fact that you struck a man whos injuries most likely ended his life and no remorse! If he truley felt remorse he wouldve stopped or at least not ran for days!
You know, all of this is how nasty rumors get started.
The entire situation is horrible for both sides. Do you think that members of either family want to read your assumptions of what you THINK happened, what a monster you think someone is, or that someone was possibly “running for his life”. Go back to your myspace and blog away. Leave this for people who have and ounce of sense and respect for the families involved in this tragic incident.
I am sure with the amount of people that were at A.A. that night that the police are fully aware of what happened. If you were not there stop theorizing on what MIGHT have happened and show a little bit of respect.
I have just finished reading your comments about Shaun, Zane & Coby. I don’t know any of these people, nor was I present when this all happened. It seems that Shaun, Zane & Coby all got into a altercation of some sort and Shaun went to his jeep to exit the parking lot, fearing for his own life. Although, there was 3 ways out of the parking lot, Shaun chose to leave on Main Street, No knowing that the Police were on their way, he continued to leave angry, panicked, afraid and maybe a little intoxicated. He has an open Jeep, according to your comments, and he is afraid Zane or Coby will try to pull him out of the Jeep or try to jump into the Jeep, so he speeds up. By speeding up surely Zane and Coby will jump out of his way and he can leave without further altercation. But they don’t move, because they think he will surely stop or maybe they wanted him to hit them. Why were they standing out there anyway? He hits them, then panic’s even more, causing him to hit the police car. Panic and Fear seem to be the downfall of a lot of people and they do stupid things. It is a horrible thing that happened Saturday night to Shaun, Zane & Coby. May God have mercy on all three of them and any one else that was involved.
Austin the brother Coby was there and was also struck by the vehicle… the man on the news that said that he got a phone call was Zane’s friend… the story is straight and someone has defined the word murder to you… It doesnt matter how long you have known Shaun… he killed someone and that is not right and he deserves to be punished to the fullest… furthermore I know many people have been banked especially in salem but the fact remains that they didn’t kill anyone because of it… there is ways to handle situations and Shaun handled the situation irresponsibily and for that he should be punished and by punished I mean life without parole…
Actually Austin, The news is right because one brother was called and came back to the scene with his girlfriend who is my best friend and then the other brother was there with him, and for anyone to take this criminal side is wrong. He took a life and ran away, that pretty much sounds like he is guilty. People aren’t always who you think they are. But I do know Zane was one of the nicest guys, and he was willing to help if you needed it. And for someone to take someone elses life, they should rot in jail
Shaun Scott has been a friend of my for many many years, and I know that no matter how drunk or angry he was , he would never intentionally do this to anyone. He is not a Murderer, and I don’t care if anyone thinks otherwise. Bad stuff can happen when you stay out drinking till 2:00 in the morning. It’s a sad, unfortunate situation for everyone invovled.
I completely agree with T1 as far as the phdry comment is concerned. Austin, maybe you should look up the definition of murder. “the killing of another human being under conditions specifically covered in law.“ As for your comment about murder being premeditated….first off, murder still occurs without premeditation (in our legal system that is called 2nd degree MURDER WHICH IS STILL MURDER). Premeditation does not mean that he has to take months to plan to kill someone. He could have taken other exits that were close to him and he did not. No, he went to the exits where the very people that he supposedly was running away from was exiting the bar and returning to their vehicles. How could you say that being charged with murder is wrong? He killed a human being. He ended the life of someone that touched so many lives. If it were one of your close friends that was the victim, I wonder if you would say the same thing? If it was not murder, tell me what is a word that describes a person that ran over and killed someone with, not just a small car, but a jeep and then drove off instead of stopping, hitting a police officer’s car (while he was still in there) and then abandoning the car? You say that being beat up by a group of people is bad, which you don’t even know is the truth, how would you describe someone trying to hit 2 people and then ended up actually hitting another person? Lies??? Did you ever think that bc Zane has two older brothers that one was actually there and one, who was in the other article, was the one that got the phone call???? Bottom line is a young life, a bright light in this world, was taken by someone who people have been describing as not a murder…. Funny, because nobody thought that Ted Bundy, an educated and supposedly a well-mannered guy, was capable of murder..and look what he did.
