Austin Cloyd Memorial Tournament
A memorial tournament will be played in remembrance of Austin Cloyd, a victim of the April 16th shootings at Virginia Tech. The Austin Cloyd Memorial Girls Basketball Tournament tipped off Monday, and games will continue through Wednesday at Blacksburg High School.
Cloyd was a member of the Bruins Basketball team in 2006. In 2007, she was one of the victims of the April 16th shootings on the Virginia Tech Campus. After the tragedy, her former coach ,Mickey McGuigan, wanted to do something to remember her time at Blacksburg. They changed the name of their annual basketball tournament, and money raised during the three day event will go to a scholarship in Cloyd’s name. “I was really impressed with how much she did for our team the year she was here with us. We feel like she was a part of our basketball family, so we wanted to honor her in some way”, said McGuigan.
So far, two students have benefited from tournament money since 2007.
To help cover tournament costs this year, the Blacksburg High School Sports Marketing class raised 3,000 dollars in sponsorship money. That money will allow more of the money from ticket sales to go to the Austin Cloyd Scholarship.
