Dog rescued from Lexington rock ledge

Usually it’s the dog that goes fetch, but Wednesday it was a rescue team that ended up fetching a dog.

It was stuck on a rock ledge above the Maury River in Lexington.  Little Tiki wandered away from home Sunday and somehow found herself in a steep situation.

“When she didn’t come back after two or three minutes I knew something was up,” said Tiki’s owner, Tracey Lackey.  “I called the SPCA and all of the veterinary places and just kind of put everybody on alert.”

Miles away from Tracey’s home and Tiki’s kennel the stranded pup cried for help and neighbors called 911.
“It’s one of those things that you don’t hear everyday, so you have to kind of figure out where you going with it,” said David Clark, Chief of Lexington Fire Department.

Quickly they figured out this was going to take a while.  They paddled the boat and tied the ropes and the scene was set for a successful rescue.

So how did Tiki get all the way up there?  Rescuers believe she came in from the top and walked down at an angle.

It took ten fire fighters and five hours to get Tiki on level ground.  Clark says she was shaking, but he did all he could to calm little Tiki’s nerves.

“I spent a little time with her, talking to her, trying to build her trust and show here that I was there to help her,” Clark said.

Out of his hands and into the arms of the SPCA, who remembered Tracey’s call.  She drove to the shelter as fast as she could and sure enough it was her missing dog and then she heard the rescue story.

“I was just like I can’t believe that.  How did she get all the way out there up on that ledge, we don’t even walk there,” Lackey said.

From now on Tiki’s going to be walking more in her fenced in yard.
