Alleghany County Sheriff’s Deputies say they’ve made an arrest in a string of arson cases, that stretch back to 2008.

Thursday night, around 11:05 p.m., deputies went a home in the 200 block of North Smith Bridge Road, in the Falling Springs Garden area of the county to investigate a call about a prowler.

When deputies arrived, they saw a house on fire.  Investigators later determined the fire was arson.

Deputies searched the area with a K-9, and collected evidence.

Officers have since arrested Timothy Nicely, and charged Nicely with arson in connection with the Thursday night house fire.

Investigators say they found other information that led them to charge Nicely in connection with seven other arson cases since February of 2008:

  • February 3, 2008: Arson of a Mercedes car
  • March 10, 2008: Arson of a Chevrolet truck
  • October 27, 2008: Arson of a Dodge car and two canoes
  • April 11, 2009: Arson of an unoccupied dwelling
  • August 17, 2009: Arson of a garage on North Smith Bridge Road
  • August 30, 2009: Arson of a Chevrolet Impala
  • October 10, 2009: Arson of a boat

Investigators say the items destroyed in the arsons add up to more than $300,000.  If convicted on all eight charges of arson, Nicely could face up to 80 years in prison, and $800,000 in fines.
