Man cyles to Canada for epilepsy awareness
A man cycled through Roanoke as part of his nearly 8,000 mile journey. He's going from Miami to Canada and back to raise awareness for epilepsy.Glenn Fenster hopes to cover over one-hundred miles through our area on his bicycle Monday. He’s just getting started for the day, making his way through Roanoke, and it’s raining.
“On a day like this my will and determination to ride through this weather is equally matched by all children who suffer from epilepsy,” said Fenster.
He rides to raise awareness for epilepsy. His fifteen-year-old son Nyle has suffered from the disease since he was 2.
“My son has seizures everyday of his life. As a parent, it’s very difficult to watch. To see your child go through something that wish nobody else would is nothing short of heart breaking,” said Fenster.“
For Fenster’s journey, he’s heading to Canada through Maine. Then he’ll turn around and comeback all the way to Miami. It’s a nearly eight-thousand mile round trip.
You can track Fenster’s progress on his website, destinymaker.org. He calls a friend several times a day with updates on how the ride is going.
“This trip pales in comparison to the courage my son and others show everyday of their lives when they never know when a seizure is going to occur,” said Fenster.
Fenster is motivated to get the word out about epilepsy and to raise money to find a cure.
“I have a level of determination to see this to the end and if it’s the end of me, well so be it. I will continue to go until I drop,” said Fenster.
A man with serious convictions, cycling for a serious cause.

This is a great story and all power to the man. But I must take issue with your reporting.
Epilepsy is not a “disease”. It is a complex neurological condition with lots of causes - it is not something you catch. It’s also really disrespectful and devaluing to say someone “suffers” from it. It would be much nicer and simpler to say his son “has epilepsy”
