A video image released by the computer game’s creator showing an injured man may not appear to be graphic, but you may change your mind once you know who it is. It’s the Islamic prophet Muhammad.
The new game, not yet released, is giving a voice to the atheist community, that’s according to the game’s creator, a University of Virginia graduate student. He wouldn’t release his name, for fear of his safety.
“Atheists have never really had anything to speak for them like this. It’s the general atheist premise that the world might be a better place without some of those religions,” explained the creator of the game.
The object of the game is to stop the spread of Christianity and Islam by murdering Abraham and the authors of the Bible, before beheading Muhammad.
“This really just mirrors, you know, a lot of violence that we see,” explained the creator.
Barkley Thompson is a Reverend at Saint John’s Episcopal Church in downtown Roanoke. After hearing about the game and seeing its images he says it’s a sign of the times.
“I think that the images speak of a culture that as become obsessed with violence, I think that it is true in all demographics, but it seems to me particularly true of younger age groups,” said Thompson.
However, the game’s creator argues the game is not just violent and it has a message to young players, helping them imagine a time when the world’s two largest religions were new and less organized.
“It’s the idea of being able to go back in time and sort of nipping the problem in the bud,” said the game’s creator.

I’d echo the previous comments.
This ‘game’ (assuming it actually exists beyond a few still images), doesn’t give a voice to atheists, at least not to any I’m aware of with a mental age of teenage or above.
I’d wonder whether the originator is just seeking to make trouble or get attention and, if so, whether they are actually an atheist, or someone trying to make atheists look bad.
Even ignoring the cheap shock-value intent, as a thought-experiment, the basic premise of the game wouldn’t make much sense to someone who sees religions as human constructs and products of the societies they come from.
Removing one or two real or more-or-less mythologised religious figures from history wouldn’t necessarily end up with a present with less and/or better religions.
@ jinxmchue
making this one person a spokesperson for all atheists is like making that god warrior psycho from trading spouses the spokesperson for all christians.
killing is not the “new atheism”
the game is a little over the top, but the main idea isn’t anything unlike any other shooter.
in games like splinter cell and call of duty, you kill terrorists and people the government doesn’t want around.
in the time period this game is set, these groups were seen as troublemakers that the government didn’t want around.
in Left Behind: Eternal Forces, your goal is to kill non-christians. i didn’t hear anything about that.
the fact that you are a christian and are offended by the game shouldn’t matter. don’t play it.
Actually, wintermute, Jesus’ himself said that those who do things like kill gays or bomb abortion clinics actually *don’t* love him.
djewel73: You do realise that the majority of fatal gay-bashings or abortion clinic bombings in America are carried out by “those of us who love Jesus”, right? It’s not like all Christians are automatically pacifists.
But, speaking as an Atheist, I think this is a stupid, horrible game, and I hope it sinks without a trace.
Radical, jihadist Muslims would want to kill him even if he had never made this game.
For me, a fundamentalist Christian, I don’t like the game and I think it’s another example of where the new atheism is going, but this guy has every right to make such a game and market it. I would never take his right to free speech away from him and would help him fight for his right if I had to.
Oops the person has a right to fear his safety but not from those of us who love Jesus. His fear is probably based on the fact that those “loving Muslims” will view this as apostasy and therefore order his death (yes they are just such peaceful people arent they).
This completely eclipses the false rumors about “convert or kill” violence in “Left Behind: Eternal Forces.“
In case the other comment doesn’t make it.
As an atheist I must say that I do not like this game, killing people to stop a religion is wrong. There are better ways to make an atheist game.
This man does not speak for all atheists. I’m an atheist and I would never condone going back in time and killing people to stop the spread of christianity or islam.
If he really wants to create a good atheist game he should make one where you try to expose the miracles as magic tricks or something along those lines.
Or even better a game where you play God that points out plot holes (sort of).
‘You as an all knowing God create two people adam and eve knowing they’ll disobey you later and then kick them out of paradise even though you’re supposedly all loving. You then refuse to forgive them despite the fact you supposedly have infinite forgiveness.‘
Will you invent confession as a means to let them back in?
YES NO
Something like that. Although anyway atheists aren’t really as organized as the other religions and we disagree on a lot of other things so to say he speaks for all of us well…
