From Lynchburg News & Advance
Strong winds are expected to reach speeds of 45 to 55 miles per hour today, posing a threat to trees and power lines in the area.
Virginia 130, or Elon Road, in Amherst County is blocked because of a downed tree.
“With the possibility of significant winds, motorists should be aware of the possibility of more debris in roadways,“ the Virginia Department of Transportation said this morning.
At least 1,800 electricity customers in the Lynchburg area are without power this morning.
Todd Burns, spokesman for Appalachian Power, said there are currently 34 outages in the Lynchburg area affecting about 1,800 customers. Most of the outages are small, with only five of them affecting more than 50 customers.
The largest outage is in the Rivermont area near Langhorne Road, affecting 850 customers, Burns said. Another large outage in Madison Heights has 450 cus-tomers without power.
“We started to see outages early this morning when the winds started to pick up,” Burns said. “…That’s kind of the way it’s going to go for us all day long.”
