Hundreds of firefighters gather to say goodbye to one of their own.

A funeral for Roanoke Fire-EMS Captain Chris Brown was held Monday afternoon at Roanoke’s First Baptist Church.

Brown died unexpectedly last week.  He wasn’t feeling well on Wednesday and went to the hospital. Doctors discovered a brain tumor.  Brown passed away less than 24 hours later.

Fellow firefighters lined the street in front of the church and the road into the cemetery.  Several firetrucks, one with Brown’s jacket draped across the front, were in the procession that drove under an arch created by two ladder trucks at the cemetery entrance.

Brown was the captain at Station 1 on C shift.  He was a second generation city firefighter, who worked for the department for 15 years.

Brown is survived by his wife, two daughters and mother.
