One year after the Taubman Museum of Art opened, businesses say its helping with cash flowOn Salem Avenue in Roanoke, you’ll find an ecclectic shop, specializing in one of a kind gifts. And across the street there is a gallery showcasing some of the most unique and dramatic art in Roanoke. Both these shops cater to a specific crowd.
“Everyone had great expectations for when the museum opened,“ said John Reburn, owner of a local gift boutique.
One year ago, the buzz was the museum would bring heavier foot traffic to the once not so busy Salem Ave. It looks to have happened.
“A lot of people come to my store and say they’ve never seen me and didn’t know of me before. Thanks to Taubmans, people find me,“ Reburn said.
Along with the museum, the street itself received a facelift.
“In just the year since the museum opened, we’ve got brand new sidewalks and new infrastructure like plumbing and electric and street lamps,“ Reburn said.
What used to be a tattoo parlor, is now an art gallery owned by Pam Floyd.
“I had two choices of where to put my business and I knew the museum was going to relocate so I started looking at all buildings around it,“ said Floyd.
And even in this tough economy, the business owners say they’re remaining optimistic.
“If we all can just hold on and stick together we’ll do fine.“
“Because of the kinds of people that are younger and cool and interested in education and art and design they’ve buyoed the business that wouldn’t be here. It’s back and it’s here and its good.“

This opening comment just speaks of the kind of person posting it. Art is subjective. You don’t have to like it but don’t trash-talk a fantastic collection, impressive architecture, talented performers and amazing programming (including a children’s Art Venture) when you have not seen it. Glad you made it to the opening but when the art and programing change on a consistent schedule, you can not comment on what you have not witnessed for yourself. If nothing else, the cafe may win you over. Their lunch menu is one of the best options in downtown Roanoke. I would appreciate you thinking and seeing before you post again.
I’ve said it before.. The Taubman sucks. It has mediocre art, something you find in a great aunts house. Can we compare to dogs on velvet playing cards ? Don’t go here. It is a total waste, no taste in art whoever chose it. Thank goodness I went when it was FREE ( Grand Opening ) and have not been back.
