Mail carriers in the Roanoke Valley delivered more than mail on Saturday for the Stamp Out Hunger food drive.
People in our area left bags of food next to their mailboxes for their mail carriers to pick up.
Volunteers from the Southwest Virginia Second Harvest Food Bank helped sort all the cans at one local post office.
Bill Buckland works with the postal serive and helps with the drive every year.
“I’m hoping this year with the economy and everything, this year it’s a little bit better. That’s what we’re hoping for. Last year, we collected 130,000 pounds,“ he said.
The food bank hopes to collect 150,000 pounds of food this year.
