The crime is in Texas, but the suspect has several ties to our area.

We’re told Nidal Hasan lived in a Vinton neighborhood for a number of years during high school.

According to neighbors, the Hasan family which included the mother, father and three sons, moved out of the Ramada Road home about 11 years ago.

Those same neighbors remember Nidal being a nice person,  who was a little shy and to himself.

One thing that really stood out to them was how studious he was.

He didn’t spend a lot of time outside, they say.

After school he just got his book bag and went inside the home.

We’ve also learned that Hasan graduated from Virginia Tech in the late 90s with a degree in Biochemistry.

While there he was part of the ROTC.  We talked to one current Virginia Tech ROTC member who said it just seems to be one tragic event after another at Virginia Tech given the most recent connection to the university.
