Washington and Lee University graduate killed in Afghanistan

The Department of Defense reports that Army Spc. Christopher Coffland, 43, was killed in Afghanistan.

The Department of Defense reports that Army Spc. Christopher James Coffland, 43, of Baltimore, Maryland was killed in Afghanistan on November 13.

The DOD says enemy forces attacked his unit with an IED. Coffland was assigned to the 323rd Military Intelligence Battalion.

The Washington and Lee University website says that Coffland was a member of the Class of 1988.

The University also says he was captain of the 1987 Generals’ football team.

Our NBC affiliate in Baltimore, WBAL reports, Coffland joined the Army Reserve last year, just a month before turning 42, the age limit for enlistment. He had deployed to Afghanistan two weeks ago.
