Police said Paul Richards Matthews, 33, was driving north on the expressway around 2 a.m. Sunday morning. He lost control of his 2006 Chevrolet Malibu near the U.S. 29 exit and crashed into several guardrails before he was thrown from the car.
Matthews was taken to Lynchburg General Hospital and then airlifted to Roanoke Memorial Hospital where he was in intensive care Sunday night.
