Job readiness workshop coming to Campbell County
Published: February 12, 2009
The Campbell County Public Library System, like most library systems, has gotten busier as the economic downturn deepens and persists. Serving over 17,000 citizens last month, the CCPLS is trying new and innovative ways to serve the varying needs of each person who walks in the door.
Nan Carmack, CCPLS Director, notes that there has been a tremendous influx of job seekers using public computers for job searching, resume writing, etc. In an effort to respond to this burgeoning segment of library user, Carmack and her staff developed a “job-seeker’s resource” guide, offering resources and tips for job searching and interview readiness. The guide outlines resources already vetted by librarians for accuracy and unbiased information and is available to anyone walking in the door of any CCPLS library (with locations in Timberlake, Rustburg, Brookneal and Altavista) as well as on their website at http://tlc.library.net/campbell. In addition to the resource guide, CCPLS is partnering with non-profit United Way member, New Land Jobs, to bring Work Readiness Workshops to each of their library branches.
New Land Jobs is a non-profit organization dedicated to assisting the unemployed and under-employed find jobs. They offer resume assistance, computer training, interview skills building, and help in identifying possible employers. Like the library, they offer free computer and internet access to all comers. Unfortunately, some CCPLS library users have transportation obstacles that prevent them from using NLJ’s services. So, NLJ is taking their show on the road to Campbell County Libraries.
The connection was made when Carmack discovered that Campbell County registrar Karen Danos’ husband, Mike, is the NLJ Executive Director. That connection, coupled with the obvious need of CCPLS patrons, prompted Carmack to get in touch. The end result is a partnership that will hopefully make a difference for Campbell County job seekers.
