Chris Townsend of Staunton is the writer, producer and director of the edgy movie he’s hoping to release this fall. It’s about three men and one woman, who he calls misfits, and their plot to kill Barack Obama during the campaign trail in 2008. “They’re down on their luck,“ Townsend said. “They don’t have jobs.“
He showed me a preview and several scenes from the picture in his Lynchburg editing studio. The scenes I saw showed lots of guns, even using Obama posters for target practice. Townsend filmed all of the movie in Southwest Virginia.
One scene was shot at E.C. Glass High School outside the gym. Townsend says he got permission from the school to shoot here where he shot a pro-Obama rally with actual Obama supporters.
Townsend says the Secret Service threatened to shut his movie down but have backed off after several meetings with them. “Their concern is that this film will ignite someone to make a stupid mistake,“ he said.
He says they have opened an investigation into him and said they will be monitoring him as the movie progresses.
Townsend says he isn’t making the movie just to get attention. “It’s not something I set out to make out of shock value or anything like that,“ he said. “There is a legitimate storyline in this.“
When I asked him if the group actually goes through with their plot he said he didn’t want to give anything away. But, he said, “The ending will blow everyone’s mind. All I’m saying is go into it with an open mind.“
Townsend says he knows he’s going to get a lot of backlash from the movie but says it’ll be worth it if he gets to share with the world what he says is a compelling story.
Reader Reactions
We Should E-mail this filmmaker and every form of press we can to make everyone aware of this film. My nephew worked on the Staunton, VA crew and he told us at dinner this film says the “N” Word a lot and talks about gays in the US as well as Christianity. Below is the directors E-mail and a link to the teaser trailer that could not be seen on TV. We need to protest this.

wow Fire Fox don’t know you don’t think that I have ever gotten into it with you on here so perhaps you can keep your sarcastic comments to yourself. You perhaps need to look it up yourself and find that as an amendment it can be changed. =)
As for the “poorly thought out” part I think any post out before I post it knowing full well it will make an ignorant person made who thinks they know it all. I do research before I post that’s why when someone posts back at me such as you just did I do not get upset, mad, or angry. I just smile because I know that you sit here watching things just to try and aggravate people yet you’d never speak that way to someone in person. =) have a nice day. No I won’t watch for comments so don’t bother =)
Our country is so blessed to have men and women who have laid down their lives to keep the fundamentals that our country was founded on. Although we have Freedom of Speech, it also comes with responsibilities for choices that we make. It’s okay to curse people out, threaten lives, and litter words of hate- do whatever it is we want to do. But yet, we want to be able to do these things, continue in our daily lives, and not be responsible in what we say or do. We are free to speak as we wish-but don’t use our constitution and ammendments as an excuse to hide from responsibility. When the heat is on and people begin to question and want an answer for actions and motives that are put out, be grown-up enough to take the responsibilities that come with it.
Once again a passionate, yet poorly thought out argument from Dispatch 911… The whole point of the first ammendment is that congress can never infringe upon it or take it away, look it up. Thank veterans for protecting your freedoms, that’s a given. But, with out freedom of speech we wouldn’t be having this conversation. Sure, we wouldn’t have to worry about a film like this coming out, but we would also be a lot more like North Korea or Iran. Freedom of Speech is the foundation for a free country, that’s why it’s The First Ammendment. Think about it.
Trying explore race relations in America
this way because the constitution affords you the freedom of speach, seems to me that you’re hidding under the constitution like the Klan hid under
sheets!
Whoa wait a second, the Constitution right? Ok how about this the right to bear arms, that one is now in the courts and some are saying its upto the states to decide what that means… Also the Constitution can be changed at any given moment by congress they can remove anything they wish.
The 2x4year term was added and can be removed, free speach all of it can be removed. The one thing that keeps things calm is the fact that we have vets and current military people out there that are loyal to the government. If we did not have those people it would not be hard for someone to take over the government and then remove the paper we call the Constitution… it really is nothing more than paper hate to put it so harsh but without the gov. backing it, without the military backing the gov, without the people backing both its a worthless thing. So yea you need to thank vets even those who guard the prez for what they do because without them all you’re little perks for living here (including your free speach) you would not have.
Not about race? Even though in the intro it asked the question, “What if a white man killed Barack Obama?“. I do not know how you can misinterpret that one. At any rate, I totally agree with free speech. But just because you have the freedom to say or do something, does not mean you should do it. Example, I’ve seen post here that state it was about President Obama when he was on the campaign trail. Ok, since former president Bush isn’t the president anymore, is it ok to go around preaching, writing books and making movies about assassinating the former president George Bush for taking the country to war on falsehoods, blowing a CIA’s cover (...which is treason by the way.) and ruining the country? Just because we have the freedom to say it, doesn’t make me more or less of an American, whether warranted or not. It only means that I have nothing else more productive to do, other than look for attention. Hence I wrote it, and you read it.
To Coca Cola - I would say it’s not about veterans or color, it’s about Free Speech…
why is everyone talking about veterans? It’s about color…duh!!
I agree with Dragracer’s latter statement. And, I too support our military. But I’m tired of the veteran crutch we’re using it to justify almost everything, freedom of speech, healthcare rights, current wars, etc. I think it is their choice and duty to do their job, just as any other. I’m not downplaying their service to our great country. But, I think we need to look at those that enlist because they were in legal trouble and that was their only way out, they were having a child, couldn’t get a regular job, wanted to travel and see the world, wanted a free education, learn a trade, and whatever other reason they enlisted. Not saying any one is greater than the other. But, We all assume they enlist to protect our freedoms and country, and that’s just not the true hard facts. And it amazes me how we all praise our servicemen/women and veterans, then drive past the homeless vets on the street. None of us are perfect, but rhetoric is just that. It does make us “seem” patriotic though.
