Lynchburg man killed in car crash

A Lynchburg man died Saturday morning in a single car accident as he tried to avoid hitting a deer.
Khalid Abdul Trotman, 25, of Belle Terre Drive, died at the scene of the 5:40 a.m. accident on U.S. 501 North near Va. 645 in Halifax County.
According to Sgt. David O. Cooper of the Virginia State Police, Trotman was driving a 1996 Ford Explorer, headed north, when a deer entered the road.
Cooper said a witness to the accident saw Trotman’s vehicle swerve to miss the deer, go off the right side of the road, and overturn. Trotman, who was not wearing a seat belt, was ejected and died at the scene a short time later.
Human fatalities in deer/vehicle collisions are much less frequent than the number of such collisions.
Cooper said drivers hate to hit a deer, or any other animal, but it is better to hit the deer rather than hit a tree, roll over or risk swerving into another lane and losing control or hitting an oncoming vehicle
head-on.
“Apply the brake and try to stop,” he said. “Don’t try to swerve.” The chances of being injured are less striking the deer, he said, than hitting a tree or going off the road and overturning.
