A woman was raped in her home off Leesville Road near the Lynchburg airport Tuesday evening and deputies still are searching for her attacker.
Campbell County deputies responded to a house on Lee Place, between Waterlick Road and Greenview Drive, around 7:30 p.m. after a woman called 911 and reported she had been raped, said Capt. L.T. Guthrie.
The woman told deputies that she had just come home and did not immediately lock the door behind her, Guthrie said. She walked into another room then returned to the living room and found a man standing there, dressed in black and wearing a ski mask.
Guthrie said the man indicated to the woman that he might have a weapon and forced her into the bedroom where he sexually assaulted her.
The woman described her attacker as a black or Hispanic man, thin and taller than 6 feet, 2 inches.
She was transported to Lynchburg General Hospital.
Guthrie said it has been years since a similar rape has happened in the county. The last one he recalled was also in the Leesville Road area, near the boundary with Lynchburg, about four years ago.
Guthrie cautioned residents to be aware of their surroundings and to make sure the door is locked behind them as they enter or exit their home.
Anyone with information on this crime is asked to call the Campbell County Sheriff’s Office at (434)592-9574 or Central Virginia Crime Stoppers at (888) 798-5900.
