An Amherst County man is dead after a wreck on the Lynchburg Expressway early Friday evening, according to police.

Steve Kendall Gowen, 49, of Monroe, was pronounced dead at the scene of the wreck about 500 feet north of the Odd Fellows Road exit, police said via a news release.

Police said Gowen was driving his 1993 Toyota pickup south, when a medical condition caused him to run the truck off the right side of the road.

The truck came back into the roadway and overturned, police said.

The road was closed while emergency crews cleared the scene, police said.

Police did not say whether Gowen died of the medical condition or of injuries sustained in the wreck.

A female passenger was taken to Lynchburg General Hospital with injuries that were not life threatening, police said.
