5:40 p.m. Updated Flood forecasts from StormTeam 10’s Jeff Haniewich and the National Weather Service:
DAN RIVER
Danville Major flooding forecast
At 23.3 ft, expected to crest at 26.4 ft around midnight tonight.  Flood stage: 17 ft

Paces Moderate flooding forecast
At 21.6 ft, expected to crest at 26.8 ft early tomorrow afternoon.  Flood Stage: 20 ft

South Boston
At 18.5 ft, cresting at 29.3 ft. late Fri. night into early Sat. morning. Flood Stage: 19 ft.

ROANOKE RIVER
Roanoke minor flooding forecast
At 10.3, cresting at 11.6 ft. by midnight tonight.  Flood Stage: 10 ft

Altavista moderate flooding forecast
At 20 ft., cresting at 24 ft. by this late this evening.  Flood Stage: 20 ft.

Brookneal moderate flooding forecast
At 23.2 ft., cresting at 27.2 ft. late tomorrow evening.  Flood Stage: 23 ft.

Roanoke City says the Roanoke River will crest at 11 p.m. tonight.

The rain we’ve seen overnight through Wednseday morning, along with the rain expected to come has prompted the National Weather Service (NWS) to issue two different flood warnings.

The one that impacts the widest area is a Flood Warning for Urban Areas and Small Streams.  The first is in effect until 7:00 p.m. Thursday, and covers:

City of Covington
City of Roanoke
City of Salem
Alleghany Co.
Bedford Co.
Botetourt Co.
Craig Co.
Montgomery Co.
Roanoke Co.

The second is in effect until 2:45 p.m. Thursday, and covers:

Amherst Co.
Appomattox Co.
Bedford City
Bedford Co.
Buena Vista
Campbell Co.
Charlotte Co.
Danville
Franklin Co.
Halifax Co.
Henry Co.
Lynchburg
Martinsville
Patrick Co.
Pittsylvania Co.


Flood Warnings cover the Roanoke River and Dan River at various points:

Roanoke River at Roanoke affecting Roanoke City, Salem City and Roanoke Co. - Moderate flooding is forecast

Roanoke River at Altavista - moderate flooding is forecast

Roanoke River at Randolph affecting Charlotte Co. and Halifax Co. - Moderate flooding is forecast

Roanoke River at Brookneal affecting Campbell Co., Charlotte Co and Halifax Co. - Major flooding is forecast

The Dan River near Danville affecting Danville and Pittsylvania Co. - Record flooding is forecast

The Dan River near Paces affecting Halifax Co. - Major flooding is forecast

The Dan River at South Boston - Major flooding is forecast

The river flooding is expected to start between mid to late morning on Thursday.
