Appalachian Power warns of scam

Appalachian Power wants customers to know about a scam artist who could show up at your door.

It happened to one Giles County family Sunday afternoon.

Melinda Huffman says a man pulled up in a white unmarked truck and was wearing a blue AEP shirt.  She says he told her the electricity would be shut off if she did not pay him $176 on the spot.

Melinda asked the man to come back when her step father Earl Lovell got home.

Lovell’s account was past due a few months back but he had just paid up on Saturday.  They realized the visit was a scam and called Appalachian Power.

Appalachian Power spokesman Todd Burns tells us people working for Applachian Power never collect money in the field, their vehicles are clearly marked with AEP logos and they never shut off power on Sunday.
