Wythe Co. Sheriff’s Office Chief Deputy Keith Dunagan says there are fewer than the original five or six hostages believed to be inside the post office. Dunagan would not say what led investigators to believe that are now fewer hostages.
Dunagan added that officers have confirmed that one of the hostage is an employee at the post office, and that the suspect has allowed a couple of the hostages to call their families to tell them they are OK.
Dunagan says the suspect still has not told officers what his name is, but is claiming to be a veteran of the Marine Corps, and not from Wytheville. Officers believe a red truck at the scene is the suspect’s.
Dunagan says the suspect has not made any additional demands, other than food and to talk with the FBI and a bomb tech expert. Dunagan says the suspect has spoken with the FBI, as well as explosives experts, and the FBI is now handling the negotiating.
Dunagan added that more FBI agents are on the way, since the post office is a federal building.

The Mayor also says the evacuated area is not expected to go beyond the three-block radius that is already set-up.
Mayor Crewe said he is shocked and sorry over the event, but the community will pull together and survive the incident.
One of our photographers is close to police near the post office, and says he saw someone walk into the building, and another person walk out. He could not tell who the people were.

Eric Deaton, chief executive officer of Wythe County Community Hospital, said he and others in hospital leadership positions have been meeting every half hour. He said the group has been in kept up to date by local law enforcement and emergency services workers.
The hospital, which recently completed an emergency room renovation, was on Code Green, Deaton said, meaning it was preparing for the potential for mass casualties or injuries. He said the hospital trains for situations such as the one that stretched into nightfall on Wednesday and responded according to plan. He said extra staff had been brought in and other staff would be staying on even after the 7 p.m. shift change. He said extra physicians had been called in, along with extra staff from the imaging department. Two surgeons and three other doctors are on standby, Deaton said.

The sound of cascading sirens mixed with the sharp report of multiple gunshots Wednesday afternoon as an armed man, reportedly strapped with explosives, shut down Main Street and other roads surrounding the Wytheville Post Office.
According to police on the scene, the man had five hostages and five pounds of C-4, a common plastic explosive, strapped to his wheelchair. Officers on the scene were encouraging the man to contact a hostage negotiator through 911.
Postal worker Walt Korndorfer said there was at least one hostage in the builiding. Supervisor Margie Austin, he said, was unaccounted for. The post master, he said, was out of the building when the shooting started.
Korndorfer said he was in his office, to the side of the Main Street building, figuring out newspaper postage reports when he heard shots and a co-worker ran past. He followed suit, running from the building and down Main Street, where he helped police block and redirect taffic in the early moments of the standoff.
Town police had blocked off a three-block square perimeter as officers outside the post office crouched behind vehicles, rifles at the ready. Police were working with the fire department and other agencies to evacuate Main Street just before 3 p.m.

An investigator tells us people living nearby could possibly be evacuated, but the sheriff’s office is waiting to hear back from the town police on how they can help with the situation.
People are being asked to stay away from the area around the post office.

No one could have said it better Jake Gallows. The truth is the truth. The USA has trained Muslims to fly plane, be doctors as well as other careers at the expense of the American taxpayer. Then how do the Muslims use this free education? Well, look at the 9-11 incidents and the Fort Hood incident and you will know. Two-thumbs up to you for speaking out about the terrorist in the USA.
dxs2, an act of terror is intended to create fear, and is perpetraded for an ideological goal (as opposed to a lone attack), and deliberately targets or disregards the safety of non-combatants.
In this country terrorist acts and acts of violence are defined by law, and are clearly seperated. When Tim McVeigh attacked a federal building, it was labeled an act of terrorism because he had an ideology, and the attack was meant to further that ideology (he thought that bombing the federal building would start a war, etc) When we were attacked on 9/11, it was done because of the ideology of a group of people..so it was terror, when the USS Cole was attacked, it was because of of an ideology, and was labled as terror. The Unabomber used his bombs to strike fear in people because of his ideology, so it was terror. There have been many groups labled as terrorist that are “non muslim”;
The Animal Liberation Front
Black Liberation Army
Jewish Defense League
Ku Klux Klan
Weathermen
Symbionese Liberation Army
some of the modern militia movement groups, etc, etc, etc BUT…..
Maybe….and I am going out on a limb here…the reason that you see muslim groups, and muslim individuals labled as terrorists more than others….is because they are responsible for more acts of terror than other groups!!! Ever think about that?
ONE HUNDRED PERCENT of Britain’s ‘home-grown terrorists’ planning to blow up 12 trans-Atlantic aircraft filled with non-combatant men, women and children at random are Muslims.
ONE HUNDRED PERCENT of Canada’s ‘home-grown terrorists’ are Muslims.
ONE HUNDRED PERCENT of the detainees in the war on terror are Muslims.
ONE HUNDRED PERCENT of the terrorists killed in active combat against the United States were Muslims.
ONE HUNDRED PERCENT of the suicide bombers who blew themselves up as an act of war against the West were Muslims.
ONE HUNDRED PERCENT of the terrorists who murdered more than three thousand innocent people on September 11 in New York, Washington and Pennsylvania were Muslims
I’m just saying….....
You know what is pretty sad is that if this guy was a Muslim he would be labeled as a terrorist. But obviously they cant because he wasn’t. The press is so biased. You can never trust the govt or the media.
No animosity, just pointing something out - it is not our apology 2 accept, I, too rejoice that it ended as it did, when it could’ve ended so tragically, I might point out u don’t know me either, I hope 4 a Merry Christmas to u also.
tiggermom, I did note the time and still chose to accept the apology. Only doglover knows what was going on in their mind and whether it was sincere. You are right in saying it would have been nice to hear it during, but it was made non the less and that is what counts. Often an apology is made after something is over. That is why it is called an apology. I actually feel very sorry for the fact that instead of rejoicing in the fact that there was a very positive ending to all of this, you continue to hold such animosity against someone who you don’t even know and who HAS made an apology. Have a blessed CHRISTmas, tiggermom.
I too would like to commend Wythe & Smyth Counties, the State Officials, Volunteer Fire Department personnel, FBI and all Emergency Personnel. This is the second time I have witnessed them at work in a similar situation. These are great people and deserve a commendation. Check this out and you will see their outstanding work in the similar situation. http://www.beliefnet.com/Inspiration/2001/10/The-Gift.aspx
Now I would like 2 take the opportunity to thank all the Sheriff personnel from Wythe & Smyth Counties, the State Officials, Volunteer Fire Department personnel, FBI and all Emergency Personnel that were there last night during what must have been a very difficult situation. This could have ended very, very tragically, but God was watching out for Wytheville, VA. I live in Wythe County and am very proud of our County’s finest.
all320 - Sorry 4 being a cynic, but notice the time doglover posted their “apology.“ It should have been posted earlier. I would have taken a “big person” to post while it was still going down. I guess @ 1:32 a.m. they were pretty certain they were gonna get their check. Give me a break. I am not void of heart, but as daylight breaks, we learn the suspect is also a sex offender whom had never stepped foot in Wytheville. Hopefully, the PO will be open 2day so they can get their check. Maybe they’ll even make a post to put our minds @ ease.
Prayer does work and we had prayer for this guy and the hostages last night. I was just wondering why these troubled people pick Wytheville. If you will recall, 10 years ago, a couple from TN held a family in Wytheville hostage for over 9 hours. Wonder why Wytheville attracts these people?
Again, THANK YOUR LORD, for a positive ending to a horrible situation.
doglover, I think it took a very big person to admit they’re wrong. Especially in a very public forum, such as this. It could not have been easy to read the comments posted towards you all night last night. We all sometimes speak without thinking first, letting our emotions speak instead of logic, common sense, and sometimes compassion. And sometimes emotions that we are already feeling, such as anxiety over a long awaited check, can get mixed up with new emotions and make us say the wrong thing. We are all human and will ALWAYS make mistakes. I hope that the other posters who had such ill feelings for you last night can realize this. We all make mistakes. The important thing is whether we acknowledge, apologize and learn from them. I sincerely hope that you and your family have a blessed holiday, with or without your check. Although, I do hope that you somehow manage to get your check today.
I would challenge everyone today to take just a moment out of their busy day to tell someone you love them. To just stop and pick up the phone, or hug someone. Maybe stop and take the cart of an elderly person to the cart corral for them. Something, anything, that may get put off because today will be such a busy day. Do it not because it’s a holiday. Do it because once again we have been shown just how precious life is. Sometimes we forget that in our busy lives. Unfortunately, it sometimes takes a tragedy, or in this case a near tragedy, to remind us. I hope we can remember this lesson.
I sincerely hope everyone who sees this has a blessed and happy holiday. Merry CHRISTmas.
