The Giles County Sheriff’s office warns neighbors in at least one local community about some uninvited house guests.

They say two men are going door-to-door pretending to be utility workers and walking away with a lot of money.

Minor and Irene Jones, who live on Curve Road in Pearisburg, fell victim to the scam about two weeks ago.

They say two guys claimed they were with the power company and they assumed they were AEP workers.

The couple says the men came into their home to check the breaker box, managed to distract them and stole a safe filled with money.

“I hollered at my wife within half a minute,“ said Minor. “I said honey we’ve been robbed.“

AEP Spokesman Todd Burns says their workers don’t go inside of homes.

Burns says their work starts and ends with the meter outside.
