Judge tells Jeff Young jury to come back Thurs....
The jury in the Jeff Young trial will resume deliberations at 9 AM Thursday. The judge in the Jeff Young trial told the jury to come back Thursday morning.
The jury will resume its deliberations at 9 AM at the Floyd County Courthouse.
Young is charged with malicious wounding, felony assault of a police officer, and two counts of obstruction of justice.
The jury got the case a little after noon Wednesday, and deliberated for about four hours until the judge dismissed them for the day.
A guilty verdict could send Young to prison for up to 20 years.
A not guilty by reason of insanity verdict would trigger a lengthy legal process, possibly keeping Young in state custody on a permanent basis.
If found not guilty by reason of insanity, Young would go back to jail to await another hearing within 45 days of the verdict.
At that hearing, even Young’s lawyers admit he would almost certainly be civilly committed to a state mental hospital.
The court would review his case on annual basis for the first five years of his confinement.
It would then review his case on a bi-annual basis after five years.
Young would have to improve across numerous fronts as it pertains to his mental health, including agreeing to take his anti-psychotic medication, which he currently refuses to take.
