Kitty season strikes Angels of Assisi, Roanoke...
The Roanoke Valley SPCA director tells WSLS they have a cat over-population problem.Cats, cats and more cats!
Angels of Assisi has rescued its share in the last couple of months.
Angels of Assisi just rescued 13 cats in Bedford County, 17 in Christiansburg and a whopping 85 from Giles County; making it the biggest cat rescue ever.
“We’re getting used to doing big rescues so we’ve learned with rescues what works and what doesn’t and so we’re able to be a lot more organized with the animals,“ said Volunteer Coordinator Lisa O’Neill.
Friday was dedicated to the Giles County cats.
They’re were getting spayed and neutered.
The first step to preventing cat over-population.
Doctors predict it will take at least two days to spay and neuter all of the cats.
They’ll be ready for adoption on Monday.
“It’s kitten season and we have lots and lots of kittens available as well. So adopting even another cat that’s not from this particular rescue will help us have room to save more,“ said Dr. Michelle Spangler.
Based on the rescues Angels of Assisi has done so far volunteers have a feeling they’re just getting started.
O’Neill believes the economy could be to blame. “It’s hard for people to keep their pets and people are losing their homes.>
Which leaves cats looking for a new one..
Next Saturday, June 27th, Angels of Assisi is holding a cat adoption open house from 2-6 p.m.
Roanoke Valley SPCA also has a building full of cats.
